General Motors Awards Contracts for Li-ion Battery Development

General Motors recently announced that they have agreement on the development of advanced lithium-ion batteries out. The above batteries will be part of General Motors E-Flex system. This step is a step forward in the Chevy Volt a production vehicle. Thirteen companies have exceeded their technical proposals, carmakers General Motors and elected only two companies in the whole. The contracts awarded by General Motors, for the development of batteries used in the two variants of the E-Flex system. Plug-in hybrid Chevy Volt in production will be around the E-Flex architecture built. One of the two companies will be issued with the order, Compact Power Inc., headquartered in Troy, Michigan. Lithium-ion battery supplier is a subsidiary of LG Chem, a Korean company. The second contract was Continental Automotive Systems, which has its headquarters in Frankfurt, Germany. General Motors also announced that it will continue looking for ways to develop advanced Automotive Lithium-ion batteries, bringing it to market faster. ”The signing of these battery development contracts is an important next step to actually realizing Volt,” said General Motors Chairman and CEO Rick Wagoner. “Given the enormous potential that the Volt is its E-Flex system offers to reduce low oil consumption , oil and carbon dioxide emissions, a top priority for General Motors, he added. Earlier this year unveiled the Chevy Volt as a concept at the North American International Auto Show. In the event of the Volt, a plug-in battery electric propulsion system announced bolide. In April, the Shanghai Auto Show, General Motors introduced a plug-in fuel cell version of the Volt. According to the manufacturer is the “E” in E-Flex electric drive, while the “Flex”, the flexibility of the car to its fuel consumption. Use of batteries in the Chevy Volt is a complex issue. For plug-in hybrid version of the battery is permanently from vibrations from the engine. The fuel cell Volt, the system has only half the power and energy compared with hybrid. The battery should be used, but should complement the car’s electrical system, while only the one fuel cell system needs. According to General Motors, the two companies awarded the contracts to the most reasonable solution to the problems of development of lithium-ion batteries for both variants of the Chevy Volt. This technology is evolving rapidly, “said Denise Gray, GM director of hybrid energy costs. “The new agreements will be an opportunity to understand deeply the different battery technologies before a decision on production.” The Chevy Volt is called by the public as a car purchase price of petrol has increased and demand for environmentally friendly vehicles increases welcome. Plug-in electric version of the Volt is expected to reduce greenhouse gases significantly to current Chevrolet Chevy vehicles with catalytic converters, the care of the unburned fuel before it is discharged into the atmosphere equipped compared. General Motors currently offers eco-friendly vehicles as the Saturn Vue Green Line hybrid, and another version of the Saturn Aura. Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon will soon be offered with hybrid power systems.
