The infrared camera might as well be the next James Bond. Not only is it as suave and versatile, it is also as ingenious. It has a wide array of uses for different types of applications and industries.

Here are a few of the different infrared camera applications.

Picture-perfect

Photography is one infrared camera application we see every day. Infrared cameras help you take the perfect shot because they show unusual tonality that is so distinctive from that of regular cameras. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, however. While some photographers would rhapsodize over the pictures taken through this particular infrared camera application, others might run out of the darkroom screaming.

Termite Terminator

Seasoned building inspectors can very well appreciate this type of infrared camera application. Sick of termites? Infrared cameras may be used to look for them. With the use of infrared cameras, inspectors can check for termite presence in the electrical and plumbing systems of your house.

Driving Duty

The automobile industry benefits from this infrared camera application. BMW automakers recognize the power of infrared cameras. They developed the Pathfinder, which is located in the grill and powered by the car’s battery. This technology can be used to help drivers see beyond the range of the headlights.

Transformer Checker

Not only do infrared cameras improve car vision, they can also be used to check on transformers. Infrared camera application of this type helps utility firms identify transformers that are on the verge of exploding.

Doctor, Doctor!

Diagnostics is one infrared camera application that has been seeing much use in clinics and hospitals. Infrared cameras may be used to check internal organs and minute parts of our body. They can probe where no one and nothing else could.

Space Cadet

One common infrared camera application lies beyond the stars. NASA used infrared cameras to learn more about space. In particular, they use infrared cameras to gather information about stars.

Everyday Security

Beefing up day-to-day security is yet another common infrared camera application. With the use of infrared cameras, security detail can sweep people and areas for dangerous weapons, bugs, and the like. This type of infrared camera application sees the most use in airports, borders, dams, and nuclear power plants.

The many infrared camera applications enumerated above are but a few of the many uses of infrared technology. There is no doubt that in the years to come, the list will continue to expand faster than you could say, “infrared!”

So you’ve heard all about the brand new game camera that your buddy bought for his deer hunting stand. But did he tell you how many photos he missed because it was too dark, or the camera wasn’t fast enough?

Buying a new game camera for deer hunting or bear hunting is an important decision. Of course the cost is important, but most hunters will tell you that the real cost is when you miss that once-in-a-lifetime photo of the 16 point buck that’s roaming around your hunting grounds. Dark or blurry photos won’t do you any good come opening day of deer hunting season.

There are a number of things that you should consider before purchasing your new game camera. Without getting too technical we’ll try to review the important points so that you can purchase the best game camera to suit your style of hunting and territory.

Things to investigate before buying a game camera:

* Digital vs. Analog

* Color vs. Black-And-White

* Quality Of Picture And Resolution

* Infrared vs. Flash

* Battery Life

* Theft Deterrent System

* Trigger Speed and Wake Up Speed

* Ease-Of-Use

* Cost

Most people would agree that the only type of camera to buy today is a digital game camera. Digital game cameras are so much easier to use and you can simply download the photos to your computer instead of having to get a film developed and reprints made at the store. Also, color is almost always the answer since there is very little reason to purchase a black-and-white camera unless you are trying to achieve some sort of artistic photography.

The quality and resolution of the pictures from your game camera will vary depending on the model. Most game cameras today provide anywhere between 2 and 7 megapixels resolution. If you want to take high quality photos that might be enlarged someday you should purchase a game camera with a minimum of 3 megapixels.

Infrared game cameras allow you to take photos at night without frightening most animals. Instead of using a flash, the infrared digital game camera will take a photo in almost complete darkness without frightening the game. As you know most animals are nocturnal and most active just before dawn or throughout the night. As a result, many of your best photo opportunities can be late at night or just before daybreak.

Battery life is an issue with many game cameras. Since your trail camera will sit outside in cold and extreme weather for long periods of time, the environment is very harsh on the batteries. Most manufacturers make up for this with either reduced numbers of photos per charge, or large batteries.

A very important feature that you need to investigate is the trigger speed and wake up speed of a digital game camera. To conserve power most trail cameras go into a sleep mode until an animal triggers the camera. Since deer and bear and other animals can move very quickly, you want to purchase a game camera that can wake up extremely fast and also has a very fast shutter speed. The faster the shutter speed the less blurred the photo will be with a fast-moving animal.

Most good game cameras today will have some sort of theft deterrent system and locking mechanism so that you can lock the camera to your tree or mount. Unfortunately, one of the main problems with game cameras is that they are easy prey for thieves since there is usually no one in the remote area to watch them.

Of course ease-of-use, simple menu features, and reasonable cost are also factors that you need to consider. The cost for game cameras runs between $200 and $600, depending on speed of the lens, features, and popularity. There are a number of brands to choose from, including Moultrie, Cuddeback, Reconyx, and Bushnell. Each of these brands has its own advantages and disadvantages and some are more costly than others.

Who says all cancer patients have to die? Cancer is deadly, but it need not kill. Through timely detection and proper treatment, it is possible to survive the Big C. Medical practitioners are now turning to technology to detect the presence of cancer cells and keep them from spreading; and what better way to spot the presence of cancer cells or ensure its complete removal than through infrared cameras?

An infrared camera, also known as thermographic camera, is a device that uses infrared radiation to form an image. It was originally developed for military use. Over the years, however, the infrared camera has become the equipment of choice not only by law enforcers and intelligence officers, but also by doctors and archaeologists.

By far the most dramatic and useful application of the infrared camera is in the field of medicine. Infrared cameras have been found to be very effective in cancer screening.

Detecting Breast Cancer

Infrared cameras are used to identify vascular thermal patterns in breasts. These patterns are usually signs of the early-stage development of breast cancer. In a process known as thermography, vascular conditions called angiogenesis are easily detected. What makes the use of infrared cameras in breast cancer detection particularly dramatic is that thermal imaging systems reveal angiogenesis years before mammograms are able to detect them.

Understanding Infrared Thermography

In infrared thermography, an infrared camera measures temperature differences occurring in different body parts. These cameras create pictures pointing to areas of the body where abnormal cell growth is suspected. Infrared cameras are able to do this because abnormal tissues give off more heat than normal tissues. What this means is that under an infrared probe, body parts with unusual cell growth show up quite clearly.

Pinpointing Skin Cancer Cells

Experts also look into the possibility of using infrared technology to map out the roots of skin cancer. Infrared cameras are made to distinguish between cancerous and non-cancerous lesions. Should this procedure be approved for widespread application, it will eliminate the need for cost-intensive physical examinations and tissue biopsies.

Finding Brain Tumors

By far the hardest of all cancers to remove is brain cancer. When surgeons operate on the brain, they try to do two things: magnify the tumor as precisely and clearly as they can, and remove as much of it as possible. The problem with this procedure, however, is that brain tumor tissues look very much similar to healthy tissues. It is, thus, possible for doctors to accidentally take out healthy tissues along with the cancer cells, or leave behind cancer cells that would eventually regrow into tumors.

Doctors at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California are now studying the possibility of sketching tumor margins through recognition of temperature changes during surgery. Because tumor cells emit more heat compared to healthy ones, infrared cameras will show doctors the boundaries between tumor regions and the surrounding healthy tissues.

Embracing Infrared Imaging

The best thing about cancer screening through infrared technology is that its non-invasive. Thermal imaging measures heat energy coming from patients. With infrared cameras, there won’t be any need to expose patients to X-rays, intravenous solutions, or incisions.

Infrared technology is still in its beta phase, and has a long way to go before it gains general acceptance. This early, however, many are hopeful that infrared cameras will revolutionize cancer detection and treatment. With prudent and proper application of technology, cancer patients need not die senselessly.

For home security camera systems, Infrared night vision cameras are quickly becoming the most popular type of cameras. These cameras can be found in indoor or outdoor varieties, and can provide clear color video during the day, and black and white footage at night, even in no-light conditions.

There are several things to consider when you are selecting infrared night vision cameras. First, determine where the camera will be mounted. When placing an infrared camera, it is generally a good idea to ensure that there are no obstructions in between the camera and the primary area to be viewed. Infrared cameras are not able to view through glass, due to the fact that the infrared light will reflect back at the camera and wash out the picture. Also ensure that the camera is not directly viewing a mirror, which can reflect IR light back at the camera, washing the picture out as well. Next, you should take into consideration the distance between where the camera will be mounted and the primary viewing area.

For example, if a camera is being mounted on your front porch to watch people entering and leaving your home, then measure between where the camera will be located and the entryway of the door. This distance will be used in determining the correct IR range to select. Once you know the distance between your camera and the area to be viewed, select a camera that has about 2 times the range for IR night vision. The reason for the increase in night vision distance is several-fold. The IR night vision distance of IR Cameras is generally rated in indoor climate controlled conditions. Especially when placing the cameras outside, the actual distance will most likely decrease due to increased humidity, decreased temperature, etc.

While installing your camera, ensure that the camera and any exposed wiring is out of reach, this will help to prevent vandals from disabling or moving the camera. If you follow these guidelines for selection and installation of an Infrared Night Vision camera, then you should be able to provide excellent video quality for daytime and nighttime use and provide video to your VCR, Standalone DVR or PC-Based DVR for great home security viewing even in no-light conditions.

Infrared security cameras and multi-camera security systems are great options for maintaining security for your home or office night and day. These cameras use infrared lighting around the lens to illuminate the picture at night, which creates a black and white image, while during the day they use regular lighting and produce a color image. These cameras come in various designs and sizes and are designed for use indoors and outdoors. They are great for seeing into complete darkness, which a day / night camera is not capable of doing because they do not have infrared lighting. You can find these cameras with infrared lighting on various web sites and from several retailers.

Individual cameras and infrared systems vary greatly in price depending on the brand, features, and design. For example, the cameras that can see over a greater distance, are weather proof and have a high picture quality will tend to be more expensive. Individual ones can range in price from $150 to about $800. The security industry employs the use of these cameras quite frequently for 24 hour monitoring and surveillance.

There are also several multi-camera systems available. These security systems can vary in price from $700 to as much as $15,000. The more expensive systems usually have several additional features, as well as infrared capabilities, and can have as many as twelve cameras. These systems are great for business and commercial surveillance. Less expensive security camera systems with infrared lighting come with fewer cameras, usually two to four, and are better for home security.

Ghost hunters use a variety or analog and electronic equipment to detect or record ghostly haunting, sounds or other paranormal happenings.

Ghosts can appear as transparent forms or people, mists, shadows, plasmas or orbs. This is where a film or digital camera is used. A good video camcorder with night vision is a must.

A digital recorder or a cassette type recorder is becoming very popular for ghost hunting. These are uses for trying to capture EVP’s or Electronic Voice Phenomenon. These are sounds that are considered to be from the other side. The other advantage to using recorders is for taking notes during an investigation. The best type I feel for investigating is the digital recorder with a USB connector. This way you can download the EVP recording directly to your computer for later analysis.

Electromagnetic Field Meters or known as EMF meters are another piece of equipment that is used for detecting changes in the environment such as changes in the electromagnetic field. These changes are said to occur due to the presence of ghosts or manifestations. They are also great for finding hidden wires or leaky microwave ovens. It is a must piece of equipment in any professional investigation.

It is not all that unusual to come across cold spots and you want to be able to eliminate any possibilities that it is coming from a draft or open window or leaky door. To find these you would want to invest in a infrared thermometer.

LED head lamps are great and very reasonable in price and great for keeping hands free from a flashlight. The LED lamps last for dozens of hours compared to a few for standard flashlights.

I also suggest taking along lots of batteries. For some unknown reason these tend to get drained quickly when ghosts are manifesting so having a few extra sets handy are a must. Of course other equipment worth considering pens, pencils notebooks and notepads.

With ghost hunting groups getting large and more professional in nature it is not uncommon for those investigating a haunting to have night vision goggles. More elaborate equipment could be thermal imaging cameras and these are often used by fire departments and can sometimes be found as surplus equipment when looking around online. Thermal imaging equipment does not come cheap!

Other electronic equipment worthy of consideration would be infrared illuminators to help extend the night vision capabilities of camcorders and other night vision devices.

As paranormal investigations and ghost hunting become more mainstream and scientific in approach we will probably be see more exotic equipment being added to the list of equipment to have.

Background

Instrumentation for locating levels in tanks and silos is often unreliable. The need for precise information about levels remains necessary, or even critical, in many instances. For example, in one situation a thermographer was employed to verify a liquid level in a large storage tank along the Gulf Coast prior to the arrival of a tanker ship. In continuous processes the operator must know how much capacity is available in each tank. Without that knowledge production may be impeded or, if an overflow occurs, a potentially dangerous situation created. Sometimes traditional level indicating instruments simply cannot determine levels. Foams and waxes, for instance, are difficult to detect and measure accurately.

A paper mill experienced a situation in which a tank was believed to be sized improperly, when in fact it was simply full of foam rather than liquid. De-foaming the tank proved more cost effective than unnecessarily replacing it with a larger one! A petrochemical plant hired a contractor to clean out a large tank. When the manway door was opened, sludge, which had settled to a depth high above the door, oozed forth creating a dangerous and environmentally damaging situation. For industries needing to comply with the safety and process requirements of OSHA 1910, thermography may prove to be a particularly cost-effective tool to use. Each of these situations represents a real instance where infrared could have been used to provide or verify information about the condition inside the tank or silo. Level location as well as verification of other level indicating instruments continues to be an important need in industry.

Thermal Imaging as a Method for Determining Levels

Most of the time, the materials in a tank or silo, whether solids, liquids, or gases, behave differently when subjected to a thermal transition. The materials often have differing thermal capacitance characteristics. Gases typically change temperature much more easily than liquids. Water, for instance, has a thermal capacity that is 3500 times greater than air. One Btu of energy added to a cubic foot of water will raise its temperature 0.016°F while the same energy added to the same volume of air results in a 55°F increase!

While the thermal capacity of solids may be similar to liquids, the different way in which heat is transferred permits them to be distinguished with an infrared camera. Solids, such as sludge, are influenced primarily by conductive heat transfer. Fluids (non-solids), on the other hand, are strongly influenced by convective heat transfer. The result is that the layer of solids in close contact with the tank wall, despite its often high thermal capacitance, heat and cool more rapidly than the liquid portion because they do not mix in the same way the liquid does. One issue is whether the tank/silo is half-full or half-empty. This determination requires further research by the investigator of the materials, container housing and environmental circumstances.

Necessary Environmental Conditions

Key to determining levels is to observe the tank or silo during a thermal transition. If viewed with an infrared camera while at a thermal steady state with the surroundings, no differences will be seen. In fact, tanks and silos that are full or empty often appear identical with no indication of a level. Interestingly, it is difficult to find tanks or silos that are not in transition, although it may not always yield a detectable image. Outdoors, the day/night cycle often provides sufficient driving force to create detectable differences. Even indoors, variations in air temperature are often sufficient to make thermal transitions apparent. Environmental conditions can have a direct influence on the ability to detect levels by thermal imaging. Wind, precipitation, ambient air temperature, and solar loading can all, separately or together, create or negate differences on the surface. Other factors to be considered include the temperatures of the products being stored in or moved through the tanks and silos, as well as the rates at which they are moving. Many tanks are insulated, although rarely to the extent that they will always and entirely obliterate the thermal patterns caused by levels. When insulation is covered with unpainted metal cladding, care must be taken to increase emissivity, as discussed later.

Thermal Patterns of Materials in Different Forms

The most obvious pattern is a result of a liquid/gas interface. In a situation where the product is not heated, the gas typically responds quickly to the transient situation, while the liquid responds more slowly. During the day, the gas may be warmer than the liquid;at night it is cooler. Liquid/sludge relationships may be more difficult to discern. A larger transient may be required to create a detectable image. Thin layers of sludge may also be indistinguishable from the tank bottom. Sludge buildup in the center of the tank (i.e. not in contact with the wall) is simply not detectable, although product buildup on the sidewalls is often quite obvious. Foams are often not difficult to distinguish from liquids but may appear similar to gases. Care should be taken when pushing the tank through a rapid thermal transition to reveal the thermal differences. Locating levels associated with floating materials, such as waxes, will typically require more persistence, skill and a greater rate of transitional heat transfer, but the results can be startling.

Whether or not liquid/liquid interfaces, such as a mix of oil and water, can be seen depends entirely on their differing thermal capacities and, to a lesser extent, their viscosity. Simple experiments suggest it is fairly easy to locate the interface of oil and water, but further work needs to be done in the field to validate this technique. Some solids, such as coal ash, plastic pellets, powdered lime and wood chips, behave as fluids and are designated as “fluidized solids.” While heat transfer in such materials is still primarily conductive, mass transfer of heat by the material’s movement can be significant. For instance, hot ash or lime blown into a silo carries its process heat to the silo. Fluidized solids tend to behave similarly to liquids in the way they respond to gravity, except for the fact that they can “bridge” across areas where liquids typically would not. In fact, locating bridging of fluidized materials is a valuable use for thermography.

Issues to be Considered

Some tanks are covered in cladding, often unpainted aluminum or stainless steel. Detecting the kind of fine temperature differences necessary to reveal levels on surfaces such as these-ones having low emissivity and high reflectivity-is nearly impossible. The radiant difference is simply not detectable. The problem, however, is most often easily rectified by applying a high emissivity target vertically. A painted stripe or a piece of tape on the tank, for instance, can work very well. For outdoors work, use light colors and/or the shady side of the equipment to avoid solar loading. Occasionally tanks are heated or cooled with a jacket. These often cause thermal imaging cameras to be ineffective for level determination . In some instances it may be possible to see the structural “stand offs” between the tank wall and the jacket.

Tanks that are insulated can also prove challenging. Thankfully, insulation levels are typically not great enough that they preclude seeing levels; rather the insulation changes the thermal dynamics to the point where a detectable level may not be obvious as often. Simple techniques, explained below, can help enhance thermal differences so that they can be detected. In some instances it may be possible to cut small “plugs” out of the insulation at various levels that would more clearly reveal the tank temperatures. Although solar loading can enhance a pattern, more often it can cause subtle thermal patterns in a tank or silo to be obliterated. It may be possible to view the container on the shady side, but sometimes it may be necessary to return when the sun’s affect is lessened. Spheroid tanks offer another type of challenge in that, when viewed from one point, their reflectance varies widely over their curved surface. It is not unusual to find the tops of such tanks appearing cooler while the bottom appearing warmer; all too often both patterns are related more to reflectance than emission. Tanks located inside of buildings are not subjected to diurnal heating cycles. Some thermal cycling usually does take place, but it may not be enough to make the radiant differences detectable. Again, simple techniques, explained below, can be used very effectively to enhance surface temperature differences.

Simple Techniques to Enhance Thermal Patterns

Often thermal patterns can be enhanced by using simple techniques to increase transient heat transfer. It may be possible to add heating or cooling directly into or to the surface of the tank/silo. The gas head in the tank responds more quickly than the liquid. As discussed above, solids may respond in a more complex manner. An industrial hot air gun can be used to heat the surface of small to medium sized tanks. Heating even a narrow area may dramatically reveal a level. Cooling can be provided simply by wetting the surface with water. As evaporation takes place, cooling drives transient heat flow and reveals or enhances the levels. While these techniques may not seem feasible for large tanks, such is not the case. Cooling in particular can easily be supplied with a stream of cold water hosed onto the tank surface. Add the element of time for the cooling to take effect and, in many cases, the image becomes readily apparent.

Conclusion

Many industries have a critical need to determine levels in tanks and silos and to validate the already existing level-indication instrumentation. Infrared thermal imaging provides a simple, cost-effective means of doing both. Conditions often allow for levels to be seen at almost any time of the night or day and throughout the year. While levels are not always immediately obvious, persistence, careful infrared imaging and simple enhancement techniques can often produce remarkable results.

With the introduction of a new breed of low cost thermal imaging cameras, thermal imaging technology is now an effective problem solving, analysis and preventive maintenance tool for a variety of applications. Thermal imaging cameras are light weight, ergonomic, intuitive and contain high resolution thermal detectors that offer valuable temperature information to isolate problems. This article offers an explanation of the technology and the applications for which it is well suited.

Thermal Imaging Cameras function much like digital photographic cameras except they take a thermal picture. The detectors measure infrared radiation which is then converted to electrical signals in order to create a visual representation of the heat an object gives off. The visual representation displays cooler items in shades of blue and hotter items in shades of red and can be analyzed and formatted on a computer via a USB download. When deciding on a thermal imaging camera, the primary features to consider include the resolution, accuracy and temperature range. The resolution is measured by pixels. Because every pixel on the screen is a discrete temperature reading, the more pixels the camera has, the more detail the thermal picture will be. Accuracy is measured in terms of a percentage of the value of the reading. Most cameras have accuracy’s between 2-5%. Finally, thermal cameras are limited to a specified temperature range. If your application deals with extreme heat or cold, you should make sure the camera is capable of taking those measurements.

While the general specifications from one camera to the next are similar, high-end cameras typically offer additional features you may find useful. Many cameras offer photographic overlays of the thermal picture. This is ideal for identification of detailed components and their proximity to each other in the thermal picture. Cameras intended for the building inspection and HVAC industries offer dew point and insulation alarms useful in locating areas of moisture or insufficient insulation. Some cameras even offer voice annotation to document and flashlights to illuminate dark areas.

There are numerous applications for thermal imaging cameras that, prior to the introduction of low-cost offerings, were previously cost inhibitive. The heat signature of electrical circuits and machine components may precipitate future problems and failures. HVAC systems and building structures display obvious thermal visualizations of inefficiencies, insufficient insulation, moisture and loose duct fittings. Pest Control professionals can identify infestations inside of walls or enclosed areas as a result of nesting areas displaying higher temperatures than surrounding areas. Plumbing professionals locate blockages in pipes and law enforcement agencies are aided in finding hidden suspects. Even paranormal investigators find thermal imaging cameras an aide in their discovery.

Thermal imaging cameras cost as little as $3,000 from manufacturers such as Extech, FLIR and Fluke, making them an economical analysis and diagnostic tool for a number of professions. Many people probably do not consider thermography as a viable preventative maintenance or diagnostic solution based on preconceived notions of price or a lack of knowledge on thermographic applications. However, those who have invested in the technology have found a way to differentiate their business from competition and reduce the overhead associated with “old-school” methods.

This has emerged as the biggest debate in the industry. Before we get much further, let’s highlight some of the key points about each type of flash.

Traditional Incandescent Flash

- Captures full color images at night

- Doesn’t affect daytime images

- Resolution & quality are generally better

- Requires surge in power to charge flash

- Uses more energy than infrared

- Battery life is decreased compared to infrared

- Trigger time is slower than infrared

- Spooks some game

- Deters some animals from entering camera area

- Attracts attention of other humans to camera location

Infrared Flash

- Captures black and white images at night

- Daytime images can be either black & white or color

- Nighttime resolution and quality are generally less than incandescent

- Pictures are sometimes blurry

- Requires very little power and no surge

- Battery life is increased compared to incandescent

- Trigger time is faster than incandescent

- Infrared flash doesn’t spook game

- Infrared flash doesn’t deter animals from entering camera area

- Infrared flash will not draw the attention of other humans

Standard incandescent flashes spook deer

After testing dozens of different trail cameras in every setting imaginable there is no doubt standard incandescent flashes spook some animals. Having said this, I can also tell you some animals seem unaffected. In fact, we have seen sizable bucks visit an incandescent camera site repeatedly and behave as if they were posing for the camera. However, the fact remains, Incandescent flashes spook animals. To confirm this I set up two feeders near the same area; one with a standard flash, the other with an infrared flash. Both feeding sites were identical in every aspect with the exception of the flashes. The infrared flash site drew roughly twice as many deer as the standard flash site. The occurrence of bucks at the infrared site was also significantly greater as well. Deer also stayed for longer periods of time at the infrared site. We all know big bucks are wary and frustratingly elusive. If your primary concern is tracking and bagging a trophy buck, I simply wouldn’t risk scaring them with an incandescent flash.

Update 4/16/2007 – It has been roughly 8 months since I set up my Incandescent vs. Infrared feeding site tests. While I have changed out many different models of trail cameras, I have always kept each site strictly either an Infrared or Incandescent site. Initially the infrared site was drawing in roughly twice as much game as the incandescent site. However, it appears the infrared site has become increasingly more popular. I collected photos today and found 584 infrared pictures compared to only 111 pictures from the incandescent site over the same 10 day period. Clearly there are long-term benefits to using an infrared hunting camera.

Spooking deer isn’t the only thing to consider

Although not spooking game is important, infrared flashes also have many other advantages over incandescent flashes. Standard flashes require a tremendous amount of power when they are charging. As a result, they use considerably more battery capacity than an infrared flash. Most incandescent flashes draw in excess of 1 amp during use while most infrared units draw 25-50 milliamps. Also, the increased energy required by an incandescent flash slows trigger time. Trigger times on most infrared units are the same whether day or night. However, the nighttime trigger time of incandescent trail cameras is usually a full second slower than the daytime trigger speed.

Conclusion

If you’re using trail cameras to scout and help you hunt, an infrared unit will take pictures quicker, last longer on a set of batteries and most importantly not scare deer from your hunting area. If a quality picture is what your after pick a incandescent model.

What if you could verify that the concrete block walls of your building have been built according to all engineered specifications? What would that mean to you? Concrete block walls can have unseen faults including empty cells, missing insulation, and air leaks. Not only do faults like these make for an inefficient building with unnecessary energy costs, they also increase a company’s liability in case of failure.

How does Infrared thermography see what the human eye can’t see? Through the use of infrared cameras which allow inspectors to view thermographic images – that is heat. For example, all walls heat up during the day, right? Concrete blocks with empty cells compared to those properly filled with grout will give off different temperatures which are easily detected with infrared cameras. Inspectors on the ground take a series of images and compile detailed reports documenting any and all faults found.

Infrared thermography not only can detect faults in concrete block walls, they can also detect water moisture in roofs, water damage, pollution and storm water outfalls, underground steam system leaks, underground High Temperature Hot Water hotspots and leaks, animal counts, heat resistance in electrical equipment, and they can conduct microscopic inspections of circuitry.

In addition, aircraft equipped with infrared cameras, fly over buildings to inspect roofs for moisture or heating and cooling systems for leaks. These airplanes are also used for counting animals. For example, deer and cattle give off different temperatures, and therefore different infrared colors, when photographed using infrared cameras.

Microscopic infrared cameras are also used for qualifying and quantifying IR signatures on extremely small objects – down to 15 microns. These infrared microscopes can monitor circuitry as well as introduce currents to simulate current levels.

Thermography imagery is used by contractors, manufacturers, municipalities, maintenance departments, engineers, parks services, and ranchers as well as by the insurance industry. Insurance companies conduct building surveys to determine the condition of the property such as pre-existing damage and existing building defects. This documentation proves that the property had these pre-existing faults. In the event of a hurricane or similar loss, the insurance company can prove that they don’t need to pay for the hurricane damage because of the pre-existing damage.

Infrared technology detects heat differences and is employed in multiple ways for detecting building faults, pollution leaks, overheating electrical equipment, energy leaks, roof moisture, and even animals. By using this technology, it is possible to visually see problems that are invisible to the human eye. Air leaks can be sealed, defects corrected, pollution cleaned up, electrical equipment repaired, roofs repaired, and animal control policies implemented. The uses for infrared thermography are virtually limitless. How will you use this hot technology?
