Presentation – Alex Winch & the Beaches Solar Laundromat

In recent years, I have had the opportunity to interview many interesting personalities: tourism experts, authors, philanthropists, entrepreneurs and enlightened. For my series of articles on the Beach district of Toronto, I tried to be specific employers, interviews with business ideas socially and environmentally innovative.

Michael Prue, the member of Provincial Parliament for Beaches / East York, pointed me in the direction ofAlex Winch, owner of Beach Solar Laundromat. You might think – a laundromat, how can it be an interesting business model? Well, read on and see that this company and its owners are far outside the norm.

This cold morning Thursday, I met Alex at his premises on Queen Street East and got an introduction to this unusual activity. When Alex laundry in 2002, was outdated and dingy purchased, Alex went to work and almost half of the washers and dryers replaced with newhigh-efficiency machines. He also made the site a complete overhaul and cosmetic showed clear.
But where it gets really interesting behind the scenes, where the entire operational process of the laundry has been redesigned. Alex always wanted to transform this business into a cutting-edge environmentally sustainable economy. So, in October 2002 ordered eight solar masses, which were announced in December 2002 in order. Alex had planned all along to increase the use of solar energyto heat the water needed in their underwear.

Alex explained that the eight solar panels on the roof of his house is about 250 square meters and were installed by a company called Solcan, London, Ontario. Include thermal plates containing a layer of copper with a four-inch copper weather vane black, which is three / s eighth inch with antifreeze runs through the copper pipe. The propylene glycol antifreeze is made for food and transfers the heat fromRoof whole system up to a heat exchanger in the basement. Even if a loss of antifreeze in the pipes, not to contaminate the water supply.

The antifreeze has a freezing point of -25 degrees Celsius, at which point the gel glycol, turn off the solar heating of water stops because the glycol system easy to move in the tubes. In this case, the system for a gas boiler backup starts and begins to heat water.

In the interest of making hisEnvironmentally sustainable business, Alex has also renewed the lighting and installed new high efficiency fluorescent lamps that are made under an aluminum reflector. The reflector essentially doubles the light output of fluorescent tubes real. In combination with high-efficiency lighting electronic ballasts, this measure alone brought to light an energy saving of 72%. Alex added that this measure of energy savings are important because the lights in his shop, 18Hours a day, 7 days a week.

One of the first things I said Alex is a manager of air to the door, the warm humid air moves out of the laundry, takes place through the coils and dehumidify the air. Condensation is captured and is transmitted through a system of exhaust pipe into a cellar. The defrost water is not reintroduced in linen concern over the contamination of water used lint.

To illustrate the operation of the solar water heating on the holdingAlex took me into the cellar, where I made a series of water tanks, pipes and sophisticated instrumentation, the actual output of energy and gas calculated this shift of solar water heating system provided.
In the basement there are two different systems hot water solar system that uses a heat exchanger and a hot water tank 200 gallons, and a backup natural gas heating system that uses a natural gas boiler with a separate A100 gallons of hot water. The separate 100-liter storage tank replaces two 200 gallons that were previously used. The new gas boiler can provide 100 liters of water in seven minutes of heat, and this new system smaller and more efficient just-in-time hot water system and heats water only when necessary. The advantage of this system is that it stores a much smaller amount of hot water, which reduces energy losses from water storage.

Thechimney brick building was taken on the roof and now serves as a conduit for the pipes to keep the glycol circulating that up to the roof solar collector. Panel heated glycol then travels back down in the basement is heated through a heat exchanger and hot water for laundry. A second heat exchanger heats water that circulates through the radiator and provides space heating for the building. An air conditioner to the left, three differentAir operators of the facility, the water temperature for laundry is 120 degrees Fahrenheit (55 Celsius), which is just enough to dissolve detergents, that no additional heat loss.

All the processes of heating and cooling are controlled by thermostats, and a sophisticated measurement system calculates the amount of gas is saved with the use of solar energy. This measurement system is a Web site on the Internet (www.bslvideo.com), which provides directenergy monitoring for those curious.

The site also offers a "live-cam-washing" that customers see the sunny beach, Laundry, animated as the laundry is allowed. Alex has installed camera's resolution to improve customer service a low, so your customers can easily check at home when a good time would be laundry. A high resolution camera, according to which images are not available for public purposes was installed as security both for laundryare not constantly busy. Some clients were initially concerned about privacy, cameras' intrusion into her, but when Alex explained that the low-resolution cameras were not sufficiently clear in our pictures), identify (or their dirty clothes, the concerns were alleviated.

Apparently, Alex has a great relationship with technology, and when he tried the complicated details of his solar system to explain to me – a total novice, things like heatHeat exchanger and flow – I asked him if he was an engineer. He said he graduated in 1985 in Physics Queens University. Four years later he added the designation of Chartered Financial Analyst in its curriculum and its sales company research on Canadian stocks, by hedge funds in the United States. In 1990 he started his first hedge fund, which followed in 1993 with the opening of an office at 667 Park Avenue in New York City. Building on its success, he retiredin 1995, an event that is referred to as "Freedom 31".

After that date, was a major shareholder of a casino company, offered as Head of Investor Relations and was appointed Prime Minister. Alex was not happy with things as they were performed with the company and requested several changes be made. If the management does not respond to his concerns, he left in 2002 and launched a hostile proxy fight threat, in other words, threatened to take over the company. Alex has been saidShareholders, and were ready to vote for change. Alex has requested that the President resign or he would throw off. "

Management at first ignored the threat, and three days after the resignation of the administration and the Board of Directors and named him as a contact for the company. Alex explained that a company can not do, not only officials away from responsibility. His lawyers advised him not to do anything. A few days later anotherDiscussion followed with management, and Alex says he does not go to the proxy hostile newspapers. Instead, he wanted to make administrative changes he had requested, he would sue for punitive damages.

The casino management company responded with a statement of his resignation and removal of the implementation of the changes that Alex had asked. In recent years, the stock multiplied by seven times, the company is profitable and one of Alex Winchthe largest shareholder.

At that time, Alex was disenchanted with the public capital markets in general, and decided to create his own small business. Living only five minutes, he immediately saw the laundry when it is available for sale and it was concluded that there may be an opportunity for an interesting engineering project. And so the story began.

Alex's interesting business model for laundry includes a laundry service and sometimes the services of twolocal lord from Monday to Friday between 1 und 7 clock. The "Fluff and" Fold service offers customers the convenience of simply collect the laundry and drop it completely finished later. Alex does not charge for the ladies their activities from the laundry, but its commercial benefit from higher capacity utilization and load-displacement from the busy evening and weekend hours to less busy of the day, creating a win-win situation for its business, folding laundry andService provider and the customer. Alex Winch always strives for solutions that satisfy the maximum benefit for all concerned.

But Alex's knowledge of electricity from renewables and innovative business models do not combine with the Beach Solar Laundromat stop: Alex unique process of producing electricity on site and monitoring the project and turned into a successful international business. Alex founded Mondial Energy, a company with globalInstall solar water heating system with the necessary control systems, solar thermal energy produced at the customer and the cost of solar thermal energy produced, regardless of where you can find.

The advantage for customers is that they are expensive in initial capital investment to get their solar water heaters and running. Instead, owns and manages the hardware Mondial to produce energy, andaccepts responsibility for maintenance of equipment. Customers are then entered into a fixed rate paid monthly, based on how much energy the unit produces.
For customers, the ability to lock in energy prices is an important factor in an environment of fluctuating and rising energy prices. Moreover, the price of solar energy supplied below the cost of a similar quantity of natural gas to make it more interesting alternative to traditional natural gas waterHeating. Last but not least, energy is completely green, without greenhouse gases.

Today, Alex Toronto has involved several large scale sustainable energy retrofit projects: In November 2006, Mondial Energy in a thermal energy sources for heating of water required in a suite of 172-nursing home operated by a non- profit organization called Local Neighbourhood Link Homes. Mondial installs solar flat plate 60, which are expectedreduce annual emissions of carbon dioxide and 40.3 tons monthly invoice Neighbourhood Link at affordable prices.

Solar energy is energy generated by Mondial, the hot water in Wood Green Community Housing Inc., a 170-unit public housing site on Queen Street East, Toronto. 108 solar panels are about 32 000 cubic meters of gas in that crowd for 53 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions per year.

Alex explained that in these times its systemmore suitable for residential or commercial multi-unit. The cost for private single-family homes do not work so well, especially since Germany has few incentives to move away from conventional energy sources. Therefore, focuses on medium and large projects. Several large commercial projects are under negotiation, including a large hotel in Atlanta Hotel and Casino in Reno Mondial Energy is also offering solar energy for water on a large scaleHeating Project in Hawaii. Contacts in the U.S. are very sensitive to its unique method of on-site production of heat. In a sense, says Alex, who has come full circle: he went from being involved with large companies to be a small businessman and I do now he is back with big business.

For his pioneering efforts in sustainable energy Alex has received numerous awards, including the Bremen Partnership Award (the 'Environmental Bremer – BremerEnvironmental Award) for the provision of high customer value and wide use in the community, sustainable water use, solar energy and to deliver added value in terms of "social dimension".

Alex is so committed to a sustainable energy supply, that his company Mondial Energy is a partner in the preparation of the annual Tourism Climate Change Awards. Two prizes of $ 10,000, sponsored by Mondial approved in November 2007:

o A World Responsible Tourism Award for Energya global

o A mission in Africa focusing on responsible energy Award

The jury for the Award will also be celebrities from global organizations such as Maurice Strong from the Earth Summit in Rio, Jose Maria Figueres (Past-President of Costa Rica), and representatives of the National Geographic Society and the UNWTO (World Tourism Organization). With this award, Alex has his commitment to raising the profile specified for the search for solutions to climate changethe tourism sector.

Alex shows his commitment to a sustainable way of life, even in the selection of some of his personal belongings: He showed me his Citizen Eco-Drive Watch, a stylish clock, seek his face is a solar cell, the clock is running, eliminating the need for batteries. Alex said, the clock will move to 270 days without exposure to light and the marketing slogan of citizens' often work on this clock as "unstoppable."

Unstoppable is a pseudonym that couldAlex Winch be applied equally – Alex will not stop until his mission, his role in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases is not performed.
